The Veronicas just wanted to show everyone at the recent Melbourne Derby a good time, but stuck in everyone’s craw, particularly the opening batsmen of the Melbourne Stars, when their pyrotechnics derailed the game.

As Sporting News reports, the Melbourne Derby was delayed by 15 minutes as Stars openers Marcus Stionis and Luke Wright waited for smoke from fireworks to clear following an innings break performance by the sisterly duo.

The pair performed a selection of hits after the Renegades set a total of 155, but when Stionis and Wright walked out to the pitch they could barely see for the heavy haze of pyrotechnics smoke that remained inside Etihad Stadium.

Spectators at the game said the fireworks went off near the end of the 10-minute performance and a thick cloud of smoke remained in the stadium for a further 20 minutes, delaying the start of the next inning.

“The visibility’s gotta be good, because you look against a sight-screen now and you’re playing with a white ball here, not a red ball,” said Stars batsman Kevin Pietersen as Stoinis and Wright prepared to bat.

“I’m (batting) three but the batters are very comfortable waiting,” he continued. “They’ve got to get the conditions right and it’s gotta be fair to both teams, it’s not fair to the batters right now.”

When the two Stars batsmen finally made their way to the pitch, they still didn’t take strike for another “seven or eight minutes” because of the low visibility. “I think they’ve learned a lesson here,” said Ricky Ponting. “Don’t let off fireworks during the innings break.

Well said, Punter.
