Why Do Aussie Bands Love Taking The Piss Out Of Courtney Barnett?

It really is a testament to Courtney Barnett and her artistic talents that she was able to create an instantly recognisable and iconic piece of album artwork on her first go with debut Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

How do we know this? Well, besides the fact that the simple and almost childlike line-drawing that adorns the Aussie singer-songwriter’s debut LP is often remarked upon by critics and journalists, it’s also been incessantly parodied.

So recognisable is the Sometimes I Sit and Think… artwork that several Aussie bands, which now includes Sydney heavy outfit Totally Unicorn, have released their own tongue-in-cheek satires on Barnett’s iconic chair and checkerboard flooring.

The Bennies got things started a few months back after parodying Barnett’s artwork for her single ‘Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party’ and then Ausmuteants unveiled their own Barnett parody, which was a tad more, uh, irreverent than The Bennies’.

Meanwhile, Totally Unicorn recently unveiled their own hilarious take to celebrate their addition to the Farmer & The Owl family, with whom the band will drop a limited release vinyl for Record Store Day, itself a parody of Ms Barnett’s debut album.

“It will be titled ‘Sometimes I Sit And Drink And Sometimes I Just Drink’ and will feature our brand new single ‘Customer Service Station’ & B side ‘Convict Brick’ featuring our good mate Karina Utomo from High Tension,” the band wrote.
