‘Saturday Night’ was a 1984 single from Australian rock legends Cold Chisel. It was the second cut taken from their album Twentieth Century and was accompanied by a music video shot in Sydney’s Kings Cross district.

At the time, Kings Cross was very much living up to its infamous reputation. It was a bustling, though admittedly sleazy, nighttime hotspot, packed to the brim with people from all walks of life and boasting clubs, pubs, restaurants, and discotheques.

But as footage shot more recently, between the hours of 11.35PM and 2.18AM on the night of Saturday, 2nd April 2016 to be specific, shows, the current state of the Cross is a far cry from its sleazy heyday. In fact, it’s all but empty.

“In 1984 Cold Chisel recorded this famous film clip in Sydney’s Kings Cross district. In 2016 what was once a vibrant night life has now become wasteland. This is Premier Mike Baird’s Sydney,” write Keep Sydney Open.

The activists from Keep Sydney Open recently went down to the Cross to capture video footage of its current state, juxtaposing it with Cold Chisel’s footage from 1984. The result, which you can check out below, is almost some sort of cruel joke.
