Double J, triple j’s digital sister station, recently celebrated its second year on the air and to mark the occasion, the higher-ups at the station have gone ahead and tallied all the relevant numbers to give us a peek into what Double J looked like in its second year of life.

By the looks of things, it seems the stats are similar to last year’s, except of course the station’s most played tracks. That title was taken out by Brisbane outfit Blank Realm with their tune ‘Palace of Love’, whilst their most played artist overall was the late great David Bowie.

One of the most interesting statistics is that 71 percent of the music played in the last 12 months was released within the last six years and according to Double J, 53 percent of the music they play was released “either this year or last year”.

Double J’s playlist is also overwhelmingly foreign and primarily male. According to the handy infographic below, just 32 percent of the music Double J played in the last 12 months was made by Australian artists, though the station’s 24-hour Bowie marathon probably tipped those scales considerably.

It probably had quite the impact on the gender parity of the station’s playlist as well. According to Double J’s own stats, 64 percent of the music they played in their second year was by male artists, though it’s not clear whether this includes bands with female members or female features.

Also interesting to note is that sitting amongst the station’s most frequently played artists are a few acts beloved by triple j, including Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, and Hiatus Kaiyote, who all get a good flogging on Double J as well.
