Disaster can strike when a band picks the wrong song to perform for triple j’s Like A Version. A song can simply be out of a particular vocalist’s range or an artist’s style simply may not suit their chosen track and let’s not even start with Courtney Barnett’s ‘Black Skinhead’ cover.

The point is, song choice is important and The Temper Trap well and truly nailed that part of their Like A Version this morning. Deciding to take on Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s ‘Multi-Love’ was an inspired pick for the band, whose shimmering instrumentals and falsetto vocals match the song perfectly.

Still, the band, who very recently came back on the scene with a new single, album, and tour, delivered their own take on the popular tune, replacing the song’s indie-psych skeleton with some groovy, rocksteady rhythms driven by Jonathon Aherne’s deft bass playing.

As we’ve previously noted, this year’s Like A Version series has gotten off to an interesting start – we’ve seen a heart-wrenching David Bowie cover, an ambitious mash-up from this year’s Hottest 100 winners, a deeply divisive cover of a huge hit from 2015, and a cover that showed us what Like A Version is meant to be.
