triple j’s Hottest 100 is always ripe for debate and discussion, but usually all the analysis and dissection that it inspires is reserved for Hottest 100 time, i.e. the months leading up to the big day and the week or so afterwards.

However, four intrepid Australians have taken it upon themselves to review every single song ever featured in a Hottest 100 countdown, in order. This month sees the Hottest 100s and 1000s launch its third season, covering 1995.

Each song is played in part and then discussed by four friends — David James Young, Nathan Harrison, Andrew McDonald, and Adam Buncher — all of whom have various credentials in the local Aussie music scene.

The four mates analyse each song and its legacy, with the second season concluding late last year and going through the entirety of the 1994 Hottest 100 countdowns. The first two seasons have nabbed a total of 6,000 downloads and streams.

However, the hosts are anticipating this season will be their best yet, since 1995 is considered one of the greatest years in Hottest 100 history, featuring hits by You Am I, Alanis Morissette, Green Day, and TISM.

“I’m really excited for this season because 1995 is the year I started listening to Triple J. I can’t wait to revisit songs like Custard’s ‘Apartment’ and Presidents of the USA’s ‘Lump’,” said Andrew McDonald in a statement.

Hottest 100s and 1000s is available weekly on iTunes or Podcast Machine.
