Soul Food Sessions is a collective of talented Melbourne filmmakers who organise guerrilla gigs for some of the city’s best loved bands and musicians, filming them as they perform on street corners and in backyards and cafes.

“Soul Food Sessions is a simple idea that yields finger lickin’ results. We are a group of filmmakers (erring on the side of kollektiv) that want to utilize our skills in a way best likened to mutual masturbation: both parties get something out of it,” they write.

They’ve worked with the likes of East Brunswick All Girls Choir, The Teskey Brothers, Summer Blood, Slim Jeffries, and Hollow Hounds. Most recently, they tapped local punk outfit Spermaids to play a rooftop in Collingwood’s Johnston Street.

Cue the impromptu street party.

As you can see below, the band’s surprise gig on top of an apparently abandoned shop gathered quite a crowd, who decided to turn the thing into a mini-block party. It’s the kind of thing that reminds you that DIY culture is alive and well.
