Geelong indie pop masters The Evening Cast have recently released their stunning new album Belong. Rich with melody and thoughtfully crafted tracks, it’s an impressive effort from the five piece.

The eight track album was created in the bands own, using gear from many eras, to according to the band “produce a sound that connects to the process of our music writing and creating. Its a collection of songs that speaks of many stories and landscapes”.

To celebrate the release of Belong, The Evening Cast have kindly penned an album track by track which you can check out along with the stream, give it a listen below and if you like what you’re hearing be sure to visit the band’s Facebook page for more info.

RIDE WITH ME

I remember sitting by the fire down at the bottom of our property with Ash our bass player, where there is a little log cabin and a running river.

I’d been working on this song during the day, and I was desperate to show someone.. It was really low key, and quite reminiscent of something by Laura Marling.. super slow and dreamy.

It’s three little stories rolled into one song, and i wasn’t sure whether it would translate in to a full band context. We jammed the night away, and it grew, and grew and worked beautifully! And now its our opener and has a super sweet vibe.

GANGS OF FOOLS

A classic Evening Cast creation. Paul (our guitarist) sends me a late night voice memo. Its a cool chord structure, with the words ‘got any lyrics and melodies floating round?’

I sat on the floor and worked hard on creating something interesting.. Our next rehearsal i played back what I worked on, and we all fell immediately in the zone and created this track.

WATER

One of our more intimate moments on Belong, and the song that stops every one in their tracks when we play it live. I remember playing it at The Grace Daring last year, and the room just fell silent. It was an incredible moment, and the whole room felt it.

The lyrics tell it all, and the stunning climax at the end is one of my favourite moments on the record.

DISTANT

This song is about travelling long hours, late at night, early in the morning, eyes on the dark road.

It’s the story of a man, who does what we needs to do, all in the hope of just getting back home. I love the bass and the beats in this track.

LOVE EASY

I once was told that I give away love to easy, in the way that I’m too vulnerable and generous with my emotions and affection… And that maybe I need to be more cautious!

Well, I threw caution to the wind, and fell madly in love and wrote the lyrics of this song in reflection of that moment. Ash had the amazing guitar riff, and i had this story to tell, and they sat perfectly together.

CLOSER

I met this girl, only briefly. And I’ve never seen her since. She was one of those people that stick with you.

She was radiant, and interesting. And this song captures a little bit of that story. Its fun, and bright, and a good song to roll down the window and sing along too.

STH COAST

Living along the South Coast of Victoria is pretty incredible. ‘STH COAST’ is an ode to that for me, about finding the place you belong.

Finding the place where you can be at your best. Finding the people who you connect with. We travel a lot as a band, individually and collectively.

If we aren’t touring, one of us is off overseas somewhere. But we know where our roots are, and the place we come back too.

CLOVER

A band favourite to play live. Its so moody, and the guitars sound insane. This song has really developed, and had many forms over the past couple of years.

We’ve played versions of it completely striped back with just acoustic guitars and we’ve played it as an epic with huge sounds, long instrumentals and climaxes.

I think this recording captures all of that. I love the intro, and i think its a great way to end this collection of songs.
