As our reviewer recently noted, Flume’s latest album, the acclaimed Skin, is an eclectic affair, showcasing the 24-year-old Harley Streten’s chameleonic tendencies inside the studio, where he’s equally skilled at progressive dance tunes as chart-busting pop hits.

One of the biggest hits of the album is ‘Say It’, a collaboration with Swedish singer Tove Lo. It’s no ‘Never Be Like You’ just yet, but it’s only a matter of time, and Streten recently recounted the tale of how it was made.

“I didn’t really know much about Tove Lo, but I went to a bar with my manager after seeing Kanye at the Hollywood Bowl,” Streten told Nova’s Smallzy. And we were chilling out and Tove Lo’s track ‘Habits’ came on over the radio station.”

“So I Shazamed it and thought ‘Damn, this chick’s got some awesome melodies. I want to work with her.’ Ended up getting in the studio with her two days later, she happened to be in LA. It just worked out.”

“I was in LA for a few days between tours when Harley reached out to me about writing together,” Tove Lo told triple j. “I’ve been a big fan of him for a long time so I pretty much ran over to his studio.”

“He played me some ideas which one of them was the track for ‘Say It’, and I just started vibing melodies over it and we put together something we loved. It was so relaxed and fun and kind of a new way for me to write. Very excited for people to hear it!”

According to the producer, the song, which has accrued more than seven million views on YouTube, was completed in just a day. So if you’re ever wondering how to write a hit, you just need 24 hours and a wild coincidence.
