According to Stevie Nicks herself, the Fleetwood Mac singer spent “millions” on her infamous cocaine habit throughout the ’70s and ’80s. It was a devastating and costly addiction only rivalled by jazz legend Bleeding Gums Murphy’s equally infamous addiction to Fabergé egg.

But Australian singer-songwriter Angus Stone had his own bad habit that seriously hurt his pocket, though it’s only recently become public knowledge. Speaking to Fairfax, the Hottest 100-topping member of Angus & Julia Stone revealed the habit that once cost him $20,000 in a single sitting.

“We had a $20,000 sushi and organic smoothies bill, which is pretty interesting,” Stone told a Fairfax interviewer. “Our manager was like, ‘hang on …’ and we were like ‘oh, we just thought that was on the house!'” The mega-splurge on organic smoothies and sushi came about when Angus and his sister were recording with Rick Rubin.

“He’s cruisy as, man … it’s just like he’s a member of the band,” Stone said of the legendary producer, who worked with the duo on their last studio album. “Being with Rick, it was really luxurious – you had people doing everything for you. It was pretty much like living in a manor with servants.”

Apparently, that luxury extended to a bill for organic smoothies and raw fish that amounts to a down payment on a house. One can only speculate on just what was in those smoothies, but we’re guessing it was gold leaf, copies of Action Comics #1, ground-up Picasso paintings, and probably kale.

Like, seriously, how the hell do you spend twenty freaking grand on smoothies? What are we missing here? Did the smoothies produce some kind of illuminating, psychedelic high like DMT or endow the imbiber with super powers? We’re just trying to justify the cost here.

According to Stone, his days doing hard smoothies are behind him and his latest project, the psych-rock band Dope Lemon, is about “good vibes only” and was recorded sporadically over a three-year period in difference studios Stone visited during his travels. Dope Lemon’s album Honey Bones is out this Friday via EMI
