Melbourne’s NGV has just become an ideal place to catch live music every Friday night with the introduction of a new weekly event: ‘Friday Nights at NGV’.
Each Friday night from 6-10pm the NGV will host a curated selection of talented Australian artists, along with an array of food, drink, art and inspiration.

Jun 24: Clare Bowditch
The opening night of ‘Friday Nights at NGV’ will feature a performance by the esteemed singer/songwriter Claire Bowditch who, along with being an ARIA winner and Rolling Stone Woman of the Year, has collaborated with Gotye and toured with Leonard Cohen. The night will also feature a live performance by jazz quartet Bon Appetit, and a short talk by the NGV’s International Art Curator Laurie Benson about the coinciding exhibition, Degas: A New Vision.
Jul 1: The Goon Sax
Brisbane trio The Goon Sax will headline this event, playing songs from their critically hailed debut album Up To Anything. Accompanying their performance will be an appearance from jazz quartet Bon Apetit and a short talk from the University of Melbourne’s Michael Christoforidis on ‘Music and the Ballet in Degas’s Paris’.
Jul 8: The Grates
The Grates have long been one of Australia’s favourite bands, known for their explosive live performances and uplifting tunes. Their appearance will be complimented by an appearance from Bon Apetit and a talk from the University of Melbourne’s Peter McPhee on the relationship between Degas and Manet.
Jul 15: Husky
Husky have cemented a reputation as one of Australia’s leading folk outfits, developing a strong following for their sweet harmonies and deft guitar work. Their appearance at the NGV will be matched with a talk from Monash University’s Brian Nelson entitled ‘Degas and Paris: Painting Modern Life’.

Jul 22: The Apartments
After forming The Apartments in Brisbane in 1978, Peter Milton Walsh moved to England a few years later to sign with legendary UK label Rough Trade. What followed has been an extensive and lauded musical career. This evening will also feature a performance from Gypsy Jam and a talk on ‘Music and the Ballet in Degas’s Paris’ by University of Melbourne’s Michael Christoforidis.
Jul 29: Halfway
After a performance from French-style jazz gems Gypsy Jam and a talk by the University of Melbourne’s Kate MacNeill entitled ‘‘Looking through a Keyhole’: Picturing Women’, ex-Go Betweens member John Wilsteed and co will put on a show you won’t soon forget.
