Bree Tranter, formerly of combustible sensations The Middle East, dropped her long-awaited solo album Another Night on Earth last week, and has sent along an assortment of shots that give a great insight into just how much time and effort can go into the making of an album.

The photos capture Bree and her rather large backing band – made up of Matt Corby, Mike Haydon, Joseph Ireland, Emma Neurath, Benson Gunner and Andy Campbell – toiling away in the studio as they wrote and recorded the album.

Inside The Studio

Playing the Rhodes in the Linear Recording Studio in Sydney. We recorded all the live band songs to tape, which was cool.

This is a shot of three of the guys recording live, with Andy Cambpell (aka Ace Romeo) shredding on the guitar, Michael Haydon on drums, and Matt Corby on bass – the guy knows how to dance all over that bass. Fantastic players.

This is Benson Gunner on guitar, probably recording ‘Deja-Vu’. This man really knows how to follow my lead vocal. I love his tones, guitar licks, and just having him around

This pretty lady on the saxophone is Emma Nuerath. She is a boss. She played saxophone on ‘Your Rhythm’, ‘Deja-Vu’ and ‘Tuesday Fresh Cuts’. I love her to death.

This photo is my home studio – where I wrote most of the album and organised how I wanted to produce it.

Here I am trying to make some notes for someone to follow – probably just me – writing an overdubs list. We had three days to record five live band songs and then, in that time, overdub – saxophone, synths, organ, flutes, vocals, vibraphone, shredding solo lines on electric guitar, and some acoustic guitar parts.

Here is Matty and Benson, chilling out on the couch of the studio. Probably not reading my notes, and just having a good old time.

Andy Campbell – what more can I say? He was probably getting ready here to shred some guitar lines. Boy do I love his shreds.

Here is Haydon tracking some live drums, concentrating hard. He was my right hand man throughout this whole project and I love working beside him, always.

This is me sitting in the auditorium of a church in Melbourne, where the album was mixed. Joel Dowling who mixed the album thought it would be better to re-record all vocals and flute through the natural reverb of the building. Also, squeezing vocals for nine songs at the end of one day at Linear Recording was too ambitious, and we thought we could get a better feel – which we did!

This is Wade Keighran, the engineer for the five live band songs. We were recording to 16-track 2”, and this is the main control room. I love this little studio, it’s full of life and vibe. I reckon Wade was listening to his favourite bass track here – which would have been ‘Under the Sun’ or the ending of ‘Tuesday Fresh Cuts’.

This is Matt hopping on the piano for fun. He didn’t record any piano on this album, but he can sure play better than me. I learn a lot from him.
