It sounds like an evil super villain’s plot to take over Gotham (or evil movie producers’ plot to waste our time and money), but a new Australian music festival is set to feature a giant, fire-breathing mechanical spider.

As Perth Now reports, after appearing at the recent Glastonbury Festival, the Arcadia Project, the custodians of this arachnophobic nightmare, are set to bring their award-winning spider to Perth this November.

The spider weighs 50 tonnes and shoots 15m torrents of fire into the air. Built from “repurposed military and industrial hardware including jet engines [and] afterburner units”, it’s basically a scene from Mad Max come to life.

It’s all part of the Arcadia Project’s multi-faceted entertainment agenda, which will also include performances featuring Tesla electricity, as well as a special spider-centred show featuring “audience abductions” and interactive performances.

“We’re so excited to come to Perth for our first Australian show and deeply honoured to be invited by [Nyoongar representative Barry McGuire] and the Nyoongar people,” Arcadia Spectacular founders Pip Rush and Bert Cole told Perth Now.

“Through meeting him and learning about the Yallor Keeninyarra, we’ve realised just how much we have in common and what powerful symbols the two spiders can be for our cultures coming together.”

“Landing this international production for the first time in Australia, in our amazing city, once again places Perth in the global spotlight,” said Nikki Graski, managing director of The Event Agency, who are bringing Arcadia to Perth.

“Uniting the spider dreaming story from the oldest living culture in the world to a contemporary award winning production really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Now we just have to pray it doesn’t do a Skynet on us and go rogue.
