Just weeks after the closure of Shebeen, Melbourne has sadly lost yet another much loved live music venue, with the management of the Shadow Electric bandroom at the Abbotsford Convent announcing the venue will cease operations after this weekend.

After first opening doors in 2012, the Shadow Electric will depart from the Abbotsford Convent to facilitate the redevelopment of the Sacred Heart Courtyard. Temporal Cast’s Label of Love showcase on Sunday will be the venue’s final event.

“We’re very proud of the program we have curated, delivered and promoted at the Convent over the last few years,” said Shadow Electric co-director Jay Rayner. “We would like to thank all of the team for their support, patience and faith.”

The 300-capacity venue is noted for hosting Courtney Barnett’s first ever sold-out show, but also hosted performances from the likes of Kurt Vile and Mac DeMarco, as well as countless other local and international artists, both rising and established.

Shadow Electric are set to announce plans for a summer outdoor cinema project to take place at a new location soon and are in the midst of planning “several music and arts events” at different venues around Melbourne.
