Apparently, Metallica are finally tired of doing everything that isn’t making a new album, from performing in a frozen tundra to releasing very poorly received high-concept concert films.

According to a German newspaper, the thrash metal legends are set to drop their long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Death Magnetic on Friday, 14th October.

The newspaper claims that the as-yet-untitled album is currently in the process of being mixed by studio engineer Greg Fidelman, who worked on Death Magnetic and the band’s Lou Reed collab Lulu.

We’ve already had a potential taste of the new album in the form of ‘Lords of Summer’, which the band played during a string of live shows back in 2014 to positive reviews from fans.

Many noted how the track, with its crushing riffs, harkened back to the days of what most agree was the band’s peak on albums like Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets.

“It definitely sounds like Metallica. It’s probably a little less frenetic than the last record,” drummer Lars Ulrich said of the record’s sound in an interview with Citizens of Humanity.

“The last one Rick Rubin really encouraged us to for the first time be inspired by our past. It was the first time we sort of looked in the rearview mirror. This time around it’s a little bit of a different thing.”

“We’re not working with Rick [this time], we’re working with the engineer from the last record, who’s producing, Greg Fidelman. So there’s some of the same production elements at play, but we’re expanding a little bit on the sonics.”

“It’s probably a bit more of a diverse record than the last one. It’s exciting, but I don’t have quite the perspective yet.” Ulrich previously claimed the record would be out this year.
