Some of our favourite folks from the Melbourne electronic scene have put together a monster playlist for us, the summer theme intended to warm us all up in our coldest weeks.

They’ll all be banding together at the Gaso tomorrow for photography collective AEVOE‘s ‘Palm Tree Resort’ party, which hopes to raise some funding for more photography-related endeavours.

Leisure Suite and Martin King will be performing a unique live set, and SHOUSE (Jack from The Harpoons and Ed of IO) will be performing live as well. There’ll also be DJ sets from Oscar Key Sung, Darcy Baylis, The Harpoons, It Girls and Luis CL of Zanzibar-Chanel.

More info about the event can be found here. Below you’ll find a whopping playlist of tracks with a loose summer theme, as well as the artists’ thoughts on each and every track.

Martin King

Trini Dem Girls (feat. Lunch money Lewis) – Nicki Minaj

Literally watched a video of dance choreography to this track about hundred times, even showed it to all my friends to convey how amazing the dancers were to which they were all like: eww no way the choreography is heinous. It took me days to realise that they were soo right and I had actually just been fully possessed by Nicky.

19th Birthday – Nidia Minaj

Achieved a life goal when I caught Nidia Minaj at dance Tunnel in London last year. The best night of dancing I had in London so sad to hear that that tiny grimy club will be closing later this year
:,(

Happiness – Alexis Jordan

Criminally underrated. Possibly due to its being abused at year 12 formals/graduations etc.

Riviera – Wabz

Best uk garage to come out of Frankston.

That Other Girl – Sevdaliza

This ones maybe a little icy for a summer mix, but its hard not to take it there when its like 4 degrees outside, literally trying to remember what summer is even like right now is impossible
I love how confusing the sentiment in this song is it kind of feels submissive and self deprecating at the same time as self assured and strong. pretty in to the film clip for this also:)

Sal – King Doudou

off the uppercuts record label run by branko of buraka som system.

Fede (feat. Manthe) – Okzharp

Ex backup dancer for die antwoord on the vocals *Bows down*

Reach Out (remix) – DJ Zinc

Tbh this one takes a little while to get going,
but is so worth it once it arrives your patience will be well rewarded

B2TS – KH/Four Tet

Clandestine four tet track released under the name KH

Sky – Sonique

The best of late millennial chill/trance.
Me and my girlfriends anthem.

Sonique.

Leisure Suite

Mick Jenkins – Comfortable ft Noname Gypsy

It’s way too cold at the moment to even comprehend any sort of warmth or sunshine, so I thought I’d ease listeners into this summery playlist with the track ‘Get Comfortable’ by Mick Jenkins.

First Choice – Love Thang (Genius of Time edit)

There’s never been a party I’ve been to where this has song has not been played and there’s a reason why, try and not dance to this.

Fouk – Cat Lady

If you ever need pre party/gettin ready to look sexy chunes listen to ‘Fouk’ and they’ll have you sorted.

Plusto – Melody

Last summer I would hear this song at every house party/club/doof and it was driving me insane, I finally found the classic 1983 track and everytime I hear it it reminds me of hot hot sweaty nights.

DESTINY – Orange Blossom

I was recently introduced to DESTINY aka Princess Nokia a few months back and I’ve been hooked ever since. Effortlessly sassy and perfect for summer or basically any time of the year really

St Germain – Real Blues (Malachi edit)

A staple track for the dj set, this track always gets people in the mood for a big night ahead.

Sunshower – Nami Shimada & Soichi Terada

This song needs to be specifically played in the car on full blast while driving to your next party destination, bonus points if you can sing Shimada’s vocal line in what can only be described as “japanglish”.

Hodini – Chronic Gangsta Boogie

One of my favourite tracks to dj, this track always provides good vibes

Solange – Losing You

You’re lying if you haven’t danced and cried to this song simultaneously

Donnie & Joe Emerson – Baby

The perfect way to end a hot summer’s night with your baby gal / guy

Darcy Baylis

Kevin Gates – 2 Phones

When people reflect on the summer, they usually romanticise only the parts their selective memory will allow. Parties that last until sunrise, decadent nights spent by the beach, the fleeting passion of a summer fling. Unfortunately, in the age of cellular data and iMessage these memories can be documented for what they objectively are: regrettable texts sent from an overcrowded club, multiple missed calls from your boss and a traumatic text conversation unpacking the intimacy you recently shared with a complete stranger. What better way to capture the uniquely 21st century summer experience than a song about needing to purchase a second, third, even fourth phone to deal with the anxiety associated with existing to the other in 2016. It also just sounds really good played really loud.

Keznamdi – Herb (Rihanna x Drake Work Ganga Re-fix)

How good is weed?

Kamaiyah – How Does it Feel to be Rich?

The first time I heard this song I was alone on a balcony in a freezing cold Berlin apartment where I had just arrived home after spending 8 hours at Berghain. For 2 minutes and 38 seconds, things didn’t seem so bleak.

Chance the Rapper – All Night

One time I threw an impromptu party and as soon as everyone arrived we listen to this song 6 times in a row. Then we put on “Beautiful Girls” by Sean Kingston, and then we put on this song again.

Carly Rae Jepsen – Run Away With Me

A good friend of mine once said that the reason summer romance never lasts is because by virtue of getting to know someone very quickly over a concentrated period of time, you both only present the likeable parts of yourself and consciously omit all your flaws. This inevitably leads to a crisis in one which or both parties act in a way that is not in keeping with the version of themselves they’ve spent the last few months perfecting, and you break up. Romantic cynicism aside, this is the perfect soundtrack for that blissful first stage of a relationship when everything seems like it’s going to be okay.

Ta-Ha – Lil Bit

In which the French rapper/singer extols the virtues of moderation, reminding us that sometimes it’s better to have 2 drinks as opposed to 20. Sometimes.

Kodak Black – Can I?

The choice between finally pursuing all of your long overdue personal goals and spending all of your spare time getting drunk and watching Netflix is a pretty apt representation of the existential dread that one faces at the end of a long, hot summer. No one hones in on this feeling better than Kodak Black when he asks the following four questions: “Can I ball? Can I chill? Can I stunt?/Can’t your boy do something productive for once?”

Neu – Hallogallo

You know that feeling when you’re driving somewhere in rural Australia and you have the windows down and it’s the middle of the day and you’re with maybe 2 or 3 people you feel so close with that none of you feel the need to engage in conversation so you just sit there silently musing on what has been and what will be and also it’s like 43 degrees? Yeah, that.

Jessy Lanza – Vv Violence

For all those who feel like they’ve been on the verge of panic attack in the midst of a sweaty club night or house party but have somehow managed to weather the storm and come out the other side enlightened.

Issues – The Realest

Remember when you were 13 and you would spend days on end traversing suburbia subsisting on nothing but stolen alcohol, Zombie Chews and fries? When you weren’t expected to offer anything but a passing “What abec are your bearings?” in a group conversation? When you tirelessly accrued an extensive knowledge of radio-friendly metalcore boy-bands? I don’t think they make zombie chews anymore and I stopped skating after 3 weeks but, as it turns out, radio-friendly metalcore boy-bands are alive and thriving, only with major label backing to boot. This is truly the anthem of the checkered vans revival.

SHOUSE

Slice of Heaven (Surecut Kids Remix) – Dave Dobbin

NZ Tourism boards go to jam plus that extra shuffle beat everyone knew it needed.

Let’s go to the beach – Banoffee

In summer you can go to the beach!! Even if there are a lot of sleazy dudes at the beach.

Pure Shores (Pier Laurenzi “Spaced” Mix) – All Saints

That hook! Have always wanted to remix this song – glad to see someone beat me there and did it way better than i ever would.

Let’s go Swimming – Arthur Russell

Best thing about summer is getting in the water repeatedly with friends.

Bermuda – Harvey Sutherland

Heated up the d-floors all winter and sure to set them alight this summer.  This tune will no doubt go down as a quintessential melbourne dance jam.

Gapu – Yothu Yindi

The tune of last summer, the summer before that and the one before that, and the next, and the next.

Ukuthula (Sculptured Remix) – Busi Mhlongo

Have to thank Alice McIntosh for discovering this gem of a record deep in the rough that is spotify. Amazed more people don’t know about it. Whew. Mushrooms + Busi Mhlongo + volcano dancing = deep.

Subways – Avalanches

2016 summer is gonna be the summer of the Avalanches, the greatest band to ever leave you hanging for 16 years – and if you aren’t into them, then I’m really sorry to hear that.

Afro – Nidia Minaj

This is a shout out to Marty King for getting me into the deep Portuguese Príncipe record label – we are still planning that trip to Lisbon for a nice Kuduro summer.

Energy – Fortunes

Another NZ inspired classix track. This is Conor really letting loose on a tight, simple beat that combines all Fortunes rnb and pop genius.

The Boy Does Nothing (Crazy Cousinz Remix) – Alesha Dixon

Reminds me of a crazy summer I spent in London with my mates (the Harpoons) when we got deep into the UK garage scene and also lived in a fairly gross house all together!

IT Girls

Nenagh’s picks:

Charli XCX – Vroom Vroom

Driving round in your lavender Lamborghini is some hot shit. Charli working with Sophie on this metallic banger melts my heart into a little pile of PVC.

Gotta Be – Des’Ree

If WikiHow could write a song, this would be it.

Juice Hoops (Simona Castricum remix) – PillowPro

All Melbourne angels working together on this hard-hitting blessing of a track.

Get Outta Way – Kylie Minogue

An inspiring feel good flick, a beautiful return album for Kylie and a stunning ‘fuck you’ to all the table corners I’ve walked into in my lifetime.

Below – BEA1991

A favourite track of mine from BEA1991, an artist who continually works with melodies that are somewhat misleading, yet always prove to be as absorbing as her #instapresence.

Laura’s picks:

SHOUSE – Whisper ft. HABITS

Two Melbourne faves melting my heart. I’ve been playing this non-stop and it makes me feel all kinds of nice, warm feelings.

Love me Tonight – Fern Kinney

This is one of those songs that when you hear, specific memories come into your head.. Love Me Tonight flashes back to a really special night with some really special people.

Thinking of you (Dimitri From Paris Remix) – Sister Sledge

Somehow this is always playing when I’m cleaning up my shitty share house on a Sunday, and more often than I’d like finding another miscellaneous pink wig in the laundry.

FEMALE – Sampa The Great

Seeing Sampa with a live band at Golden Plains was just what my weary head needed. She’s amazing and I can’t wait to hear more.

Scandalous – Mis-Teeq

I listen to this nearly every morning commute; often on a packed tram with my headphones in, slowly but silently, becoming more confident to take on the day thanks to Mis-Teeq.
