Destrends are a Melbourne three-piece making some of the best post-punk in recent memory.

‘Papa’ is the first track we’ve heard off the band’s forthcoming debut EP, and they’ve absolutely put their best foot forward with a polished and distinctly modern take on a classic formula.

The lyrics (“Papa! Papa don’t hate me!”) concern a certain family Christmas being ruined by singer/bassist Matt Savage, who claims the incident was when he learnt to keep his mouth shut. Thankfully he knows when to open it back up, his rich timbre reminiscent of Faris Badwan’s (The Horrors/Cat’s Eyes) own gothic post-punk revivalism.

We’ll have to wait until later this year for the EP, so until then your best bet is to catch them in August. ‘Papa’ is officially released this Friday July 16.
