You’re probably familiar with the concept of ‘six degrees of separation‘, the idea that every human being on the planet is separated by just six people. It’s perhaps most famously illustrated by Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Basically, you name an actor and then you forge a connection between them and Footloose star Kevin Bacon. It doesn’t necessarily have to take six steps and it’s a staple of the IMDB message boards.

Well, WhoSampled have now applied the concept to music. Their new interactive web app is called Six Degrees of Music Separation and it can basically link any two artists you throw it, so long as they’re in the extensive WhoSampled database.

For example, we wanted to know how closely Tame Impala and Justin Bieber are related and it turns out they’re both connected to producer Kuk Harrell. Harrell produced Rihanna’s cover of ‘Same Ol’ Mistakes’ and worked with Bieber on his Christmas album.

Check it out via WhoSampled now, but we must warn you it’s extremely addictive and you can basically scrap anything productive you were hoping to do today. We’re sorry and you’re welcome.
