The Simpsons has been known to dabble in the world of music. The ‘Homerpalooza‘ episode celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year and many consider it to be one of the best and most iconic episodes of television’s longest running sitcom.

The show has also delved in the world of hip-hop, perhaps most famously in the episode ‘Pranksta Rap‘, which featured a cameo from 50 Cent. But The Simpsons are set to go deeper into hip-hop territory than ever before with their first-ever hour-long episode.

As Billboard reports, The Simpsons will commence its 28th season (yes, it’s really been on the air that long) in January and will feature an hour-long episode that parodies the hip-hop industry, The Great Gatsby, and shows like Empire.

The Mr. Burns-centred episode, entitled ‘The Great Phatsby’, will feature cameos from Empire‘s Taraji P. Henson and Key & Peele‘s Keegan-Michael Key, and will see Homer narrating a tale of soured friendship between Burns and hip-hop mogul Jay G.

“Burns is an old-school Gatsby and Jay G is a new-school Gatsby,” said executive producer Matt Selman, “and their mutual Gatsbyism brings them together.” Jay G eventually seduces Burns into the glitzy hip-hop lifestyle, sapping his money, allowing Jay G to snatch up Burn’s nuclear plant.

Sounds like yet another gimmick to keep The Simpsons relevant not unlike that awkward ‘live’ episode they did a few months back? It probably is. But quite frankly we can’t wait to see Mr. Burns rocking some bling and maybe diamond-encrusted grills.
