We’ve been pretty impressed with the latest round of Like A Version covers. After complaining about the spate of soundalike covers that paired minimal drum pad-driven beats with ethereal vocals, someone’s put the life back into triple j Like A Version.

After two sterling covers from Jake Bugg and Cub Sport respectively, the latter of which we called the best of the year so far, Grouplove hit the triple j studios last week to lay down a unique take on the latest number from the Dune Rats crew.

And this morning Just A Gent tapped Thandi Phoenix, L-Fresh The Lion, and a string trio to completely overhaul Kid Cudi’s ‘Day ‘n’ Nite’. Yes, there was a drum pad involved, but to all the Like A Version performers out there: if you must use a drum pad, do it like this.

As we’ve previously explained, it’s not the drum pads we have a problem with, but what they usually mean for a Like A Version cover. But in this case, Just A Gent managed to put together a highly original cover that retained the basic elements of the original, whilst displaying them in an entirely new light.

We recently ran through a few of our favourite Like A Version covers of the year so far, including Sarah Blasko’s incredible David Bowie cover, Guy Sebastian linking up with Paces, and Hey Geronimo mashing up Courtney Barnett and Regurgitator.
