Among the most exciting news unveiled on the first day of BIGSOUND is Virgin Australia increasing their baggage allowance for musicians embarking on domestic flights.

As The Music reports, Virgin Australia will now give touring musicians an allowance of 64kg across four pieces of checked luggage, doubling the previous allowance.

Back in 2011, the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN), an Australian musician’s advocacy group negotiated with Virgin to increase the amount of checked baggage musicians can carry without an exorbitant cost being added.

Much like the previous baggage allowance initiative, to be eligible you must be a member of a recognised Australian music body, such as ARIA or APRA-AMCOS.

Last year, AMIN announced a string of initiatives that were enacted with a view to helping Australia’s touring musicians, including discounted Virgin Australia fares.

QANTAS airlines followed suit just over a week later, amending their luggage limits for musicians, allowing three pieces at 23kg per piece per person.
