It’s on, people. Mastodon are officially back in the studio working on their next slab of rock and roll goodness. Brent Hinds, guitarist for the Atlanta crew, recently took to Instagram to share the news with fans.

Hinds shot footage from inside the studio where the band are working on the follow-up to 2014’s Once More ‘Round the Sun with producer and previous collaborator Brendan O’Brien, best known for his work with Pearl Jam.

The footage doesn’t give much away, but shows Hinds in the studio with drummer Brann Dailor and fellow guitarist Bill Kelliher (who’s warming up with a few licks in the background) discussing the recording setup for the session.

“It has begun ! New mastodon record with Brendon o Brian!” Hinds wrote on Instagram, much to the delight of fans. Details at the moment are scant, but Hinds previously told Guitar World that Mastodon’s seventh album could be a double-LP.

Meanwhile, bassist Troy Sanders recently told the Atlanta Business Chronicle that the band have been busy working on the album throughout 2016 and are hoping to release it early next year, though he wasn’t specific.

“We’re going to record it in the Atlanta area, so we’ll get to go home and sleep in our own beds at night,” Sanders said. “We’re excited because we’ve done lots of touring over the past few years.”

“It’s that refreshing cycle of write, record, tour, tour, tour, take a break, write, record, tour, tour, tour. This is one of the many healthy transitions that we do as a band to keep our momentum going.”

“We’re excited about recording because we haven’t recorded a record in over two years. Positive vibes are in the house.” Check out those positive vibes being generated in Hinds’s Instagram post below.
