Sydney quintet Castlecomer have just released a pretty damn good new EP in All Of The Noise, which sees them firmly planted in the guitar-based alt-pop territory staked out by the likes of Bloc Party and Foals.
With those sorts of clear influences, we were expecting them to sling us a bunch of similar names when we asked them about the records that have rocked their worlds over the years, but instead we’ve got a pretty eclectic list from vocalist Bede that covers butterflies, mammoths, and cats of all sizes.
All Of The Noise is out today, and the band are taking the show on the road for a national tour, dates below. To find out what makes them tick, here are the 6 records that changed Castlecomer’s lives.
Carole King – Tapestry
Probably next to Brian Wilson the greatest pop composer of all time. First Vinyl I bought when I got my record player last year.
Kendrick Lamar – To Pimp a Butterfly
Inspiring a generation of young people to strive for greatness. This is a masterpiece and Kendrick is a fookin’ poet.
Cat Empire – The Cat Empire
First gig I went to and an inspiration for our band live – one of the hardest working bands in Australia and they show that you can put dance into any genre.
Whitley – Go Forth Find Mammoth
First album I bought with my own money. Walked for like 30 minutes down Darling Street in Balmain to Fish Records and bought it after I heard the song ‘Poinson in our pocket’ on Triple J. Australia’s Sigor Ros, come back Whitley.
Kaiser Chiefs – Yours Truly, Angry Mob
The Chiefs, along with the Strokes, got us really in to indie rock music that people could dance to. Back around the time of this album they were writing huge tunes, with a great beat and a lyrical message – a real shame their head songwriter has jumped ship.
The Lion King Soundtrack
Came out right when we were hitting our straps in preschool. A soundtrack to our generation and some absolute bangers n mash on that Disc.
