You know sometimes you see something and you know you don’t actually need it and you can’t really justify the ridiculous amount of money it costs but you just want it? Like you want it so bad, you tell yourself you need it. Yeah, this is one of those things.

Mag-Lev, a Solvenian audio company, has launched a Kickstarter campaign in the hopes of funding allegedly the first production line of levitating turntables. Think your regular turntable, only the platter the vinyl record rests on it levitating… as in, in the air.

Like we said, we really want need one.

Mag-Lev are looking to raise $300,000 to bring the levitating turntables to life, and they’re well on their way to raising the first $100k. At the time of writing, Mag-Lev’s Kickstarter campaign has managed to raise just under $98,500.

How do these levitating turntables achieve this magic? Magnets! The turntable’s magnetic platter suspends the record in the air during playback, “[integrating] the uplifting experience of music into the turntable design itself, bringing the feeling of zero gravity into your living room”.

“By using our innovative and patented technology, we were able to achieve not only magnetic levitation, but we’ve also been able to maintain the incredibly precise turning of the platter with sensor regulating software,” the Kickstarter page reveals.

“Air is the smoothest medium with least amount of friction, which further elevates this project into a truly unique listening experience.” However, as Pitchfork notes, other (much more expensive) turntables by McIntosh, Clear Audio, and Hanss Acoustics already have floating platters.
