The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees for 2017 are set to be announced this week and the word on the street is that amongst the bands and artists eligible for induction this year, Peal Jam is a “heavy favourite”.

For those not familiar with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s induction criteria, a band or artist becomes eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, and Pearl Jam is a frontrunner, according to Cleveland.com.

Amongst this year’s eligible acts set to receive heavy consideration are Nine Inch Nails, The Cars, The Smiths, Janet Jackson, Chic, Sting, Kraftwerk, Alice In Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, and Yes, just to name a few.

But as Consequence of Sound notes, artists like Tupac Shakur, The Prodigy, PJ Harvey, Aphex Twin, Temple of the Dog, De La Soul, and even our very own Kylie Minogue are eligible for consideration this year.

The induction ceremony will take place in April after a judging panel determines the class of 2017 based on each band or artist’s influence and the significance of their contributions to the “development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.

Of course, the Rock Hall of Fame has received a considerable amount of criticism for being less about honouring an artist’s legacy than about celebrating how much money they’ve made for major labels.

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder goes way back with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, having inducted several artists himself, including The Doors, the Ramones, R.E.M., and Neil Young.
