‘God’s Graffiti’ is the third single from Melbourne’s Darling James aka James O’Brien, who you may know as the former frontman of The Boat People. It’s the latest single taken from his upcoming debut EP Theory Of Mind – a work two years in the making and put together with the production efforts of Robin Waters (Ella Hooper, Machine Translations) and John Castle (Dustin Tebbutt, GL).
Rather than just predictably-shiny pop, James explores a variety of textures within the confines of his Coburg studio, blending the zither and marimba with surges of guitar fuzz and stabs of piano to keep you on your toes. In the words of Kate Miller-Heidke, “his songs are consistently surprising, playful and boundary-pushing, but still with an accessible emotional core,” – and it’s hard to argue.
