It turns out that The Black Keys’ drummer Patrick Carney is not a big fan of Lady Gaga’s comeback single ‘Perfect Illusion’, which as we’ve previously noted has been getting a less than warm reception on the charts and from critics.

As part of Vice’s Vice News Tonight, Patrick Carney took part in a new segment called Patrick Carney’s High Music Standards Corner. This segment consisted of Carney listening to music, and then giving a typically snarky review of said tune.

“First of all, I hate guitars that sound like that,” he opined. “I’m lost because the guitar at the top of it sounds so s***ty. It’s like ‘Eye of the Tiger’, but not even nearly as good as that.”

“It sounds like Hulk Hogan is playing the f***ing guitar.” Now, keep in mind that the guitar on that track was performed by no other than Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, who Carney once Tweeted was “the coolest man in music”.

In response to the criticsm, both Gaga and Mark Ronson, who co-produced the track, have hit back at Carney’s quips, with Ronson recalling that Carney once sat in his living room listening to ‘Uptown Funk’, before telling him “it wouldn’t work”.

Likewise, Gaga said Carney wasn’t “as snarky as I would be watching him in a guitar death-match w Kevin Parker and Josh F**ing Homme”. To be fair, considering Carney is in fact a drummer, she’s 100 percent right.

Carney appears to have a sense of humour about it all though, sending a Tweet through later of himself playing guitar rather horribly, accompanied by the message that it was his “submission for the guitar competition”. Kevin Parker is yet to chime in on all this yet, but we can only hope he’s able to be as humorous as Patrick Carney when he does.
