Before he was making epic space operas that make Captain Harlock look like Thumb Wars, Luke Steele was best known as the frontman for Perth alternative rockers The Sleepy Jackson.
After a short string of well-received EPs, the band dropped their debut album, Lovers, in 2003, which was followed by Personality – One Was a Spider, One Was a Bird three years later.
But the story, as far as the band’s discography is concerned, seems to end there, though Steele did speak of a third album whilst doing press for Empire of the Sun’s Ice On The Dune in 2013.
According to the frontman, the third Sleepy Jackson album was completed and showcased for the band’s label, who weren’t all that enthused about the project and the album was ultimately shelved.
However, we may finally be about to hear it. The Sydney Morning Herald recently caught up with Steele and his Empire of the Sun bandmate Nick Littlemore, discussing the duo’s new album, Two Vines.
At one point, Steele discusses how Littlemore’s involvement with numerous side-projects leave him feeling “underused” and to kill time, he’s been working on his much-anticipated project with Daniel Johns as well as “a new Sleepy Jackson record”.
However, no further details are given, but the report does suggest that Steele plans on releasing the work. As for his project with the former Silverchair frontman, we’ve been waiting on that one for a while.
“Me and Dan have been in a studio in L.A. for the last two months and we’ve just been working on our record and it just sounds like the future. We’re gonna be coming out with something pretty amazing,” Steele told triple j in August.
