Studying for exams can be a stressful and disheartening time. You may be in the middle of studying for exams right now. If you are, we must advise you to stop procrastinating and hit them book immediately.

Are you studying again? Good. Now, as stressful as studying may be, winning $50,000 has to make it a much easier process, no? Maybe we should ask Gretta Ray, the Melbourne singer-songwriter just won the 2016 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition.

“I missed the first call because I was in the middle of doing a practice exam,” she told triple j. “I turned my phone on when I was finished and had a text saying ‘hey, could you call back – it’s about the Vanda and Young songwriting competition’ and I was like ‘No way.'”

“Called me again and told me and I was just in shock for the rest of the day, the week – I’m still in shock right now. It’s unbelievable!.” The 18-year-old songwriter beat out the likes of Sampa The Great, Tash Sultana, Josh Pyke, and more.

“I can’t believe a song I started writing at the end of my bed in March, has gotten the support that it has. It’s just unbelievable,” she added. According to triple j, Ray has two more exams before she departs for Nashville to record for her debut album.

Ray won the competition with her stunning entry ‘Drive’. Second place in this year’s Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition went to Emma Louise for ‘Underflow’, whilst third place was shared between Tigertown (‘Lonely Cities’) and Tia P (‘4 Seats from Beyoncé’).
