Later this month we will mark 20 years since the passing of legendary INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of his tragic death, a campaign has emerged calling for a statue of the singer to be erected in Sydney.

“The campaign to have a bronze statue commissioned and placed in the City of Sydney was born from a visit home to Sydney in June 2016 by Rosanda Herbert and a long standing desire for such a monument by Vincent Lamaro,” the organisers of #AStatueForMichaelHutchence write.

“The #AStatueForMichaelHutchence Twitter campaign continues to gather momentum. It is evident that Michael’s influence continues to inspire a whole new generation. A significant number of high-profile people, from many different disciplines, have given the project their endorsement.”

“We believe that it’s time for Michael to come home and stand proudly amongst us once again in Sydney. It’s time to honour a legend with a Statue for Michael Hutchence.” The campaign has even been endorsed by the late singer’s half-sister, Tina Hutchence.

Meanwhile, two documentaries about Hutchence’s life are currently in production, as well as a collection of his unreleased solo material, and INXS recently announced that there have been talks about putting the band back together to record and play live.
