Billed as the “camping festival of your big gay dreams”, Gaytimes announced its 2017 lineup yesterday featuring Ngaiire, Ali Barter, Gretta Ray, Le Tigre notable JD Samson, and more.
With a 1,000-punter cap, the weekend-long camping festival takes place at Lake Mountain Alpine Resort in Marysville has garnered sterling reviews as a welcome new addition to the Aussie festival calendar.
In addition to music, the diverse program offers performances, installations, projections, yoga, cinema, workshops, and provides a tolerant space for the LBTQIA+ community.
However, despite having already sold out early bird tickets, a whole gang of ignorant commenters over on that bastion of maturity, social media, felt the need to put a damper on the party for everyone.
Take for example triple j’s official Facebook page, which announced the lineup for Gaytimes 2017 yesterday, only to be greeted by a fleet of douchebros jokingly tagging their mates.
As the top comment on the post sadly reads: “How gross is it that 4 out of the 5 comments on this post are guys tagging their friends in this as some sort of joke though.”
Sad, indeed. That’s not to mention all the commenters who simply missed the point and asked why it’s okay to have a ‘gay festival’ but having a ‘straight-only festival’ would cause an uproar.
Just for the record, anyone can attend Gaytimes, it merely puts a focus on providing a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQIA+ people, and tagging your mate and writing “Bet you already have your tickets” isn’t funny.
