Some joyous news to cap off the week, as rapper and human Swiss Army Knife Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover has just announced his next record, dropping its first single in the process.
‘Me And Your Mama’ is the first cut we’ve been able to hear from his upcoming third album, which we now know will be titled Awaken, My Love! and released on December 2 through Liberator/Glassnote Records.
Easing us back into the mind of Gambino with the gentle strains of a cosmic choir, ‘Me And Your Mama’ backflips completely at the two minute mark, as Donald absolutely tears into a hoarse, menacing vocal shred – no rap in sight. The track premiered on Zane Lowe’s BBC1 show, where the presenter proceeded to spin it six times in a row – a new record, apparently.
Donald has of course been pretty busy of late, creating and starring in his own hip-hop themed comedy/drama Atlanta earlier in the year, and just landing the role of a young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars flick. The guy is a powerhouse though, and we’re sure he’ll be able to throw a damn good album into the mix as well.
With the hint of even more varied influences than ever before, we’re genuinely excited to see where he takes this next album – for now, we’ll just have to jam ‘Me And Your Mama’ on repeat and wonder.
