While he’s seen his fair share of success over the years, Guy Sebastian has discovered first-hand some of the lows of the music industry, and the pain of a single not cracking the charts.

As News Corp reports, Guy Sebastian’s recent single ‘Candle’ was written as a tribute to his wife Jules, and features a rougher pop sound than what most fans of his may be used to. Sadly, the song only reached 59 on the ARIA charts, making it Guy’s lowest reaching effort yet.

“You are so insecure as an artist so I felt crap when Candle did so badly,” Guy told News Corp. “I love the song and it’s Jules’ favourite of everything I’ve done. I would rather keep trying new things that inspire me.”

As noted by News Corp, Sebastian’s ‘Candle’ was a mixture of his usual pop sound, mixed with more rock-based guitars, indicating that commercial radio may be unsure of what to do with a song when it straddles the line between genres. Programmers told Sebastian that his song “sits in between pop and Triple M because of the rock guitars”.

While ‘Candle’ didn’t make the ARIA top 50, his next track, a softer balled entitled ‘Set In Stone’, managed to shoot to number 1 on the iTunes charts.

As we wrote back in July, it costs quite a large amount of money to produce a hit song. It can cost upward of $1 million to make a hit song, as was the case of Rihanna’s ‘Man Down’ back in 2011. But, it should be noted that despite pumping a large amount of cash into something like this, it won’t always result in a hit that can make back the money already put into it.

However, despite ‘Candle’s poor performance, it should be remembered that Sebastian also released the song ‘Never Hold You Down’ back in 2010, which is so far his only single to not chart at all.

Two years after that poor performance, Sebastian’s ‘Battle Scars’ was released, and became his most successful single yet, reaching no. 1 in Australia, cracking the US charts for the first time, and climbing to the higher reaches of the Norwegian and New Zealand charts. This just goes to show that while even successful musos like Guy Sebastian can have a miss here and there, it might just mean that success is right around the corner.
