Though he’s currently busy with the recently reformed Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell has confirmed the legendary grunge outfit that makes up his day job will unveil a new album in the new year.

Speaking to Full Metal Jackie on KLOS Radio’s Whiplash, via Music Feeds, Cornell said the band’s follow-up to 2012’s King Animal will be dropping in 2017 and a tour will likely follow.

“Well, it’ll be in 2017 — both those things, hopefully, will happen — barring any, sort of, unforeseen thing, which I don’t see any reason why those two things won’t happen,” the vocalist said.

“The next thing that I am committing myself to concentrating on a hundred percent is the next Soundgarden album.” Cornell has never had a problem with busying himself, having launched a solo career and fronted Audioslave in the past.

Speaking to Meltdown on Detroit, Michigan’s WRIF, via Blabbermouth, guitarist Kim Thayil confirmed the band had been busy writing new material throughout 2016 and were aiming for a late 2017 release.

“We’re shooting [to release it in] late 2017,” the legendary guitarist said. “We’ve already done some writing. We have some more writing to do, and then there’s the whole studio process.”

So it looks like the next Soundgarden album is still in its embryonic stages and we won’t be getting studio updates for a little while, but we already know what we’re asking Santa for next Christmas.
