We’re nearing the end of the year now and much like your workplace, Like A Version is getting ready to wrap up for the year. But that doesn’t mean things are slowing down. Well, maybe a little bit. This morning’s Like A Version was an especially smooth and silky, downtempo cover that came courtesy of Canadian jazz outfit BadBadNotGood.

The Toronto crew lent their slinky stylings to the classic Beach Boys number ‘God Only Knows’. Now, taking on a song that iconic and treasured, as well as that intricately arranged and produced (Brian Wilson was known for being a bit of a perfectionist in the studio), is a huge task, but BadBadNotGood did it with grace and tastefulness.

Lush and classy, you wouldn’t even know it was ‘God Only Knows’ if not for the vocals, which breezily glide over the top of the arrangement. The band really make the tune their own by not trying too hard to brute force things and simply putting their own spin on it. It’s a recreation, not a cover, which is what Like A Version ought to be.

Not too long ago we ran through a few of our favourite Like A Version covers of the year so far, including Sarah Blasko’s incredible David Bowie cover, Guy Sebastian linking up with Paces, and Hey Geronimo mashing up Courtney Barnett and Regurgitator.
