Nine Inch Nails will be delivering a fairly intense Christmas present this week, in the form of five-song EP Not The Actual Events, which will be available from December 23 via the NIN website.
Reznor said of the new record: “It’s an unfriendly, fairly impenetrable record that we needed to make. It’s an EP because that ended up being the proper length to tell that story.”
It’s the first release under the NIN moniker since 2013’s Hesitation Marks, although Reznor himself has enjoyed one of the most creatively busy stints of his career. Since 2013, he has been appointed Chief Creative Officer at Beats Music (a position he now occupies at Apple Music), scored the film ‘Gone Girl’ with Atticus Rose (who has now joined NIN as an official member), as well as scoring space flick ‘Juno’, Mark Wahlberg’s new film ‘Patriot’s Day’, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s climate change doc ‘Before The Flood’. He also oversaw the release of a NIN rarities boxset Halo I-IV.
And speaking of deluxe packages, NIN fans have even more reason to celebrate, with the announcement of a limited edition 4xLP vinyl version of classic Nine Inch Nails album The Fragile. The reissue will feature 37 bonus tracks, and won’t be available digitally.
Speaking on that album, Reznor said in a press release: “The Fragile occupies a very interesting and intimate place in my heart. I was going through a turbulent time in my life when making it and revisiting it has become a form of therapy for me.
“As an experiment, I removed all the vocals from the record and found it became a truly changed experience that worked on a different yet compelling level. The Fragile: Deviations 1 represents Atticus and I embellishing the original record with a number of tracks from those sessions we didn’t use before. The result paints a complimentary but different picture we wanted to share.”
The deluxe reissue can be pre-ordered now, and will be shipped in autumn sometime. Not The Actual Events is out on Friday. Artwork for the EP below.
