Pearl Jam will be inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year, alongside fellow inductees: Journey, Yes, ELO, Joan Baez and – oddly enough – Tupac Shakur.

Chic’s Nile Rodgers will be given the Award For Musical Excellence.

Artists are able to be inducted in the Hall and Fame 25 years after their first single or album release. Both Pearl Jam’s first single ‘Alive’ and album Ten came out in August, 1991, meaning they missed last year’s April cut off date by a few months.

This is the first year both Pearl Jam and Tupac Shakur have been eligible to be added. Pearl Jam will also be the first rock band to have formed in the ’90s to be inducted.

Mike McCready spoke to Rolling Stone in May about the inevitability of their induction. “It would be a great honor, I would be happy about it”, he said, adding cautiously: “But you never know. I don’t know their process and how they pick. It could be a couple of years from now. I mean, Cheap Trick took forever to get in. So did Deep Purple. But we’re aware of it.”

Congrats to all the nominees. The ceremony takes place at the Barclays Center on April 7, 2017.
