One of the biggest drawcards at this year’s Falls Festival – not to mention one of the biggest buzz acts on the planet right now – Childish Gambino will no longer be appearing at Falls Downtown, the Fremantle leg of the festival taking place on January 7-8, and two acts have been announced as replacements.

ARIA winning rock act King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard and rapper Allday will be the last-minute additions in Gambino’s place, who it’s claimed has had to pull out of the Fremantle dates in order to attend the Golden Globes, for which he has just been nominated off the back of his new comedy/drama Atlanta.

While it’s a blow for the newly-minted Western Australian event, Gambino will still be playing at the Lorne, Marion Bay and Byron Bay legs of the festival.

“We regret to inform our Fremantle patrons that Childish Gambino will no longer be able to perform at this year’s Falls Downtown in January,” the organisers announced last night.

“We have received word that he is in the running for a couple of nominations at the upcoming Golden Globes, and as a first time nominee and show creator he will be flying back to America prematurely. He looks forward to making this date up to you all in the near future. All other Childish Gambino performances will be continuing as originally scheduled in Lorne, Marion Bay and Byron Bay.”

According to organisers, an international replacement “just isn’t possible” due to the late notice and VISA considerations around Christmas, but they’ve done their best to fill the void with two compelling local additions. Refunds are being offered only to those who purchased one-day tickets for the Saturday, on which Gambino was set to perform, rather than two-day tickets.

“For 1 day festival ticket holders on Saturday 07 January, refunds will be available for a limited time and only to the original ticket purchaser, closing at 5pm ADST on Saturday December 31. No other refunds past this date will be processed.

“Please contact Oztix via [email protected] with your order number. Refunds will be processed back to original purchase credit card within 10 business days. Please note: Oztix office is closed 25 and 26 December and you will receive a response when they return on 27 December.

“Updated playing times will be released by the end of the week.”
