After a 2016 that brought us some hugely impressive (and some not so impressive) cover versions of our favourite tracks by all of those buzz-worthy bands, triple j’s Like A Version has fired up once again for 2017.

This morning, New York duo Phantogram, best known for last year’s raging hit ‘You Don’t Get Me High Anymore’, hit the triple j studio to tackle the moody ‘Weird Fishes/Arpeggi’ by none other than Radiohead, sticking quite close to the original.

Notably missing from this version of the track is the presence of Radiohead’s soaring backing vox, which definitely bring a bit more oomph to the composition, and Phantogram’s version doesn’t quite imbue the track with the same menace you hear creeping into the margins of the original.

One comment on the vid unfavourably compared the track to Centrelink hold music; perhaps a little harsh, but this one certainly misses out on some of the mounting tension and subtle fragility that makes Radiohead’s track so memorable, and perhaps plays it just a little bit too safe.

Check Phantogram’s effort out below, along with a lovely live version by Radiohead themselves.
