Radio’s continuing battle to stay on side with digital streaming services, and remain at the forefront of trending music, spawned a new show over the weekend.

Nova Entertainment launched the Apple Music Fresh 40 on Saturday (Jan 21) with Nova’s Kent ‘Smallzy’ Small on hosting duties.

Over three hours every Saturday from noon, the new show sees Smallzy count down the 40 most listened to songs on Apple Music during that week. The show’s EP is Zach La Cava.

Peter Clay, NOVA Entertainment’s Head of Programming Nova 96.9 smoothfm network said, “Smallzy already has a great relationship with the biggest and emerging music artists around the world, and is connected to what his listeners want to hear by his number one radio show Smallzy Surgery. It seemed the perfect fit for an announcer with unique insight into trending and emerging hits to host this new countdown.”

“I’m pumped to be counting down Apple Music Fresh 40 each week and bringing our listeners some of their favourite hits,” added Smallzy.

The show continues Nova’s four-year love affair with Apple. Nova’s own Fresh 40 was compiled using iTunes download data, and according to Radio Today, Nova’s ‘Best Of’ shows in 2013, 2014 and 2015 were a collaborative effort from the pair.

Nova isn’t beholden to Apple, however. In August last year, the network launched its New Music Show Powered By Shazam. The national show, airing Sunday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm, is hosted by Jason Smith and airs tracks that are “trending with tastemakers or that record labels are about to move on.”
