An Italian scientist turned musician has created a robot band, with whom he jams on tunes such as Kraftwerk’s ‘The Robots’. And by “jams on”, we of course mean “meticulously programs to trigger sounds and recreate the music of Kraftwerk.” Rock and roll!

Giuseppe Acito has programmed the musical Lego robots using “open-source technologies, microcontrollers, 3D printer, robot arm, music DAW, smartphones, pocket synthesizers and more.”

Acito has named the group Tao Mata Band, and their first output came a few years ago, with a cover of Daft Punk’s “Da Funk”. He has long been fascinated with the idea of robots making music, an obsession that stems from a Sunday arvo music show. We’ll let him explain.

“I was 11 when during a Sunday afternoon of 1978 Kraftwerk appeared for the first time in an Italian TV show. For me it was a dazzling discovery, one that has changed my life , so I went into my room , took a tape and recorded the audio from the tv speaker!! I still keep that precious recording and I’ve played it again and again for a long time.
“Since that day I was waiting the time when the robots make a real functioning band and play music live, and nowadays a lot of music robots around the world are growing up, giving new ideas and creative communication to the music.”
Enjoy!
