Freestyle rapping is one of the most impressive aspects of rapping and MCing, and when it’s done right, especially by someone who knows their way around a word or two, it can be bloody phenomenal, as was the case on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon Friday night.

No stranger to the world of freestyling is US rapper Common, who Jimmy Fallon brought onto his Tonight Show as a guest. As he is wont to do, Fallon enlisted Common to partake in a game he occasionally encourages guests to play, called ‘Wheel Of Freestyle’.

The point of the game is to get the guest to perform a freestyle rap that includes three randomly generated words. In this case, Common was tasked to incorporate the words ‘blender’, ‘snowplow’, and ‘Keanu’ into a freestyle. The result was, as Keanu Reeves himself would say, ‘excellent, dude’.

To add further interest, Fallon put Common head-to-head with Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, MC of Fallon’s house band The Roots. Black Though was tasked with incorporating the words ‘blanket’, ‘IMAX’, and ‘cheeseburger’. Proving that he is no stranger to lyrical wordplay, Black Thought also managed to complete the challenge flawlessly.

The stakes were again raised with Common being challenged to incorporate the words ‘kangaroo’, ‘limousine’, and ‘virtual reality’, with the ensuing performance blowing away the previous two freestyles.

You can check out a video of the challenge below, which will undoubtedly make you jealous of both MCs ability to freestyle without breaking a sweat.
