Aside from just being a pretty great pun on its organiser’s name, the Hot Dub Wine Machine “bash in the grapevines” has us sold for a variety of other reasons, both booze-related and otherwise.

The addition of a trio of talented electronic producers to the lineup of the Brisbane leg today certainly has something to do with it, with Hayden James, Sampology and Dena Amy now joining the likes of PNAU, Miami Horror, Young Franco and more at the time-traveling, wine-sipping affair.

With Hot Dub Time Machine at the helm and last week’s Hobart debut a sell-out, the series of boutique day festivals takes expertly-curated music and gourmet food across some of Australia’s best wine country, with the vid below giving a good idea of what you can expect.

With wine and sunshine on the mind, we thought we’d get into the spirit by chatting with him about the best vinyl records to drink wine to, from new cuts and grimy ’70s masterpieces to one very odd record indeed.

The Daly Wilson Big Band: On Tour

This may be the record that started it all, my mum had this in her collection and when I discovered it at about 10 years old, I couldn’t stop listening. And I still haven’t! It really captures a time when a big-band could tour the country sponsored by Benson and Hedges, with about 20 of the best musicians in the country absolutely rocking it out.

It got all the classics on it: ‘Theme from Shaft,’ ‘Ode to Billy Joe,’ and the best ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ medley ever. I own three copies of this record and one of them is always playing when people come over for a glass of wine. If you see this in your local Vinnies, BUY IT!

The Cannonball Adderly Quintet: Mercy, Mercy Mercy

Is this the greatest live album ever recorded? I think so. And if you don’t really like Jazz, don’t worry, you’ll like this. It was recorded in 1966 at a bar in Chicago, popping this on with a glass of red is like jumping in a time machine.

You can hear every person in the crowd and every drink poured at the bar. And you can hear the amazing music, highlighted by the title track, which I promise you will recognise. It became a surprise hit, and has been covered and sampled hundreds of times.

Stevie Wright: Black Eyed Bruiser

I’m not normally someone who collects rare records, but I had to hunt this down and get it in my collection. Stevie Wright is (in my opinion) Australia’s first proper rock star and this album is a swaggering, grimy, 70s masterpiece. I highly recommend checking out ‘I’ve Got The Power,’ which is a relatively unknown album track, that is a crazy, rock-gospel odessy.

I don’t buy records to sit on the shelf, this is always next to my turntable, and goes very well with a shiraz.

The National: Boxer

Great records aren’t always old records. This is one of my favourite albums, and it’s perfect for vinyl and wine. Every time I’ve seen them live, the singer has a glass of red in his hand, which is always a good sign.

There are no bad songs on here, but my current favourite is ‘Slow Show.’ As someone who spends a lot of time away from home, the line: “I want to hurry home to you, put on a slow dumb show for you, and crack you up,” gets me right in the feels.

Rev. Forrest McCullough: Flight Final

I’m slightly obsessed with weird old, spoken-word records. In any record store, the first bin I look at is way up the back with the label “misc.” This record was actually found for me in Melbourne by a wonderful ex-girlfriend, and it’s my favourite record ever.

It’s a “dramatic reconstruction” of a the journey to the afterlife, if that journey was taken on a 747. I’m not particularly into religion, so I find it hilarious. Tickets must be stamped with the blood of Christ, and a helpful angel cuts all earthly burdens before take off.
