As it’s International Women’s Day today, triple j were already doing their bit to raise awareness of by featuring female artists only for the entire day, played exclusively by the station’s many female presenters.

Going one step further with their #GirlsToTheFront campaign, the station’s resident hip hop experts Coda Conduct took to the air to big up the many talented women in hip hop over the years, both locally and internationally, and have now dropped a monster playlist for good measure.

Erica and Sally gave triple j their thoughts on common perceptions of the relationship between women and what is traditionally a very male-dominated genre:

There’s this really prevalent perception that the reason we don’t hear about too many female MCs is because there’s simply not many out there. Or — more insidiously — that they’re ‘not as good’.

But it’s a lie! It’s all a lie! And to offer a musical counter to that argument, we’ve put together a playlist of 200 — YES, THAT’S RIGHT! 200! — of our favourite female MCs from Australia and around the world.

Because, you know what? It’s fantastic seeing music media, festival bookers, record labels, streaming platforms, industry conferences, radio stations and all the big guns get involved in fixing a big problem in our music scene.

But first and foremost, it’s YOU GUYS — the music lovers — who make the biggest difference. So, we’ve got a favour to ask you. Pick one new woman on this list and listen to her music. Show your friends. Become a super fan. Stick with her through her ups and downs.

And we just wanted to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU to the people who have done the same for us. Hopefully we can take today as a chance to pay it forward.

Hit the nail on the head there – as they did with the playlist, which runs the gamut from icons like Eve and Lil’ Kim, to some of the best up-and-comers in the game. Give it a spin below.
