The wintry art and music festival of Dark Mofo is one of the country’s most unique live experiences you’ll find, a Tasmanian spin on the traditional rituals of the winter solstice packed with all the joys you’d expect of a boutique festival.

Just announced is the first act, and it’s an interesting way to kick things off, with Norway’s black metal pioneers Ulver will be heading over for a one-off Australian show. Having played together for around 25 years, they’ve picked up their home country’s equivalent of ‘Album of the Year’ wins and Grammy nominations on their way to their 13th album The Assassination of Julius Caesar.

“Dark Mofo is one strange beast of a festival,” says Ulver vocalist Kristoffer Rygg, “and they have really pulled out all the big guns to make it possible to drag a pack of Vikings quite literally to the other side of the world in June.

“We have heard exceptional tales about this midwinter celebration. Considering the overall aesthetic of the festival and the type of art and acts it has featured before, this will be a trip extraordinaire and no doubt a once in a lifetime experience for Ulver.”

He’s not wrong there, as Dark Mofo really is an experience you don’t see in other parts of the country, put on by Tassie’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) with the support of Events Tasmania and the State Government.

It all takes place from June 8 – 21, and the full lineup will be announced on Friday April 7, with tickets on sale on Tuesday the 11th. Ulver will be playing the Odeon Theatre on Thursday June 15, and presale tickets go on sale Monday April 10.
