Aussie songstress Kate Miller-Heidke has been getting some well deserved attention from the States recently, her brand new single ‘Are You Ready?’ has received rave reviews after being licensed to a New York Lottery advert.

Apparently the song was fully written before being chosen by the New York Lottery for Instant Games, whose slogan reads ‘Be Ready’. The 33 second advert features a bunch of regular people wearing what can be interpreted as their ‘dream outfit’ and partaking in their ‘ideal lifestyle’, if they won the lottery.

Mirroring a resemblance to M.I.A and Santogold, Miller-Heidke’s bubblegum-honeyed vocals have taken a turn down an alternative route than her previous works from the albums ‘Curiouser’ (2008) and debut album ‘Little Eve’ (2007). Her vocals are barely recognisable from the high-pitched performance on songs such as ARIA nominated ‘Last Day on Earth’ and ‘High Road’. Her musical style has transcended from gentle pop/folk ditties to infectious, danceable keys driven tracks such as ‘Are You Ready?’

Despite the welcomed change, Miller-Heidke still continues to carry through her niche trademark of quirky, peculiar sound akin to Bjork or Tori Amos.

Originally from Brisbane and now based in London- Miller-Heidke is a classically trained Opera singer. For her new side project ‘Fatty Gets a Stylist’ (in which she sought advice from Ben Folds on tour to help give her confidence in branching out from her comfort zone), Miller-Heidke has once again teamed up with long time collaborator and husband Keir Nuttal. Nuttal was responsible for the programming and producing for their new self-titled album which was released in Australia in June on Sony Music and was mixed by Cenzo Townsend (Florence and the Machine, Bloc Party and Editors).

It sounds like Miller-Heidke may be finally cracking the notoriously difficult US market, with a little help from the New York Lottery.
