Join The Tone Deaf Team

Tone Deaf is made up of a small editorial team supported by a large and growing number of volunteer contributors who venture out each week to cover gigs and tours across the country. As we continue to grow we need your help to keep pace of all the events happening each week. If you have a passion for live music, and have photography skills or are a skilled wordsmith we’d like to hear from you.

Internships

To keep Tone Deaf running day-to-day takes a small but dedicated team, and we’re looking for bright young faces who’d like to learn more about publishing, the internet, and the music industry, and are interested in getting involved behind the scenes.

Our internship program runs for three months, and you'll need to be available for two days a week, 9am - 5pm. Our office is located in Prahran, Melbourne, so you'll also need to be able to travel there easily, and bring a laptop that isn't a dinosaur with you.

Experience in publishing online, such as a blog, and a firm grasp of the english language are a plus. Tasks include assignment writing including features, columns, and opinion, reviews, phone & video interviews, research, slideshows, our twice-weekly mixtape, and attending editorial meetings.

We like to keep things pretty casual but there are a few conditions you'll have to meet to qualify:

  • We're based in Prahran, Melbourne so you'll need to live in Melbourne and be able to travel to our office
  • The website runs 24 hours but we do have office hours (9am - 5pm) and you'll need to available on certain days for those hours
  • You'll need your own laptop that isn't a dinosaur (ie. can connect to wifi)
  • You'll need to have word processing software such as Word, and image editing software

Furthermore if you can meet some of the following conditions you'll be bumped to the top of the pile:

  • Experience publishing online (in particular the Wordpress platform)
  • Writing skills as well as a firm grasp of the English language
  • Sound understanding of social media (Facebook and Twitter)
  • Passion for music and at least basic knowledge of Australian music
  • Not a douchebag

How it works:

  • You will work two days a week at our office
  • Each week we will have a specifically designed program for you to follow with a list of tasks
  • Tasks include research, assignment writing including features, columns, and opinion, reviews, phone & video interviews, slideshows, our twice-weekly mixtape, and more
  • The internship runs for a total of three months
  • Interns are welcome and encouraged to join as contributors

Do I get paid?

All our interns are volunteers and are not paid, although we think you'll get as much if not more out of the experience than we will.

Where do I sign up?

If this sounds like a good fit for you please email intern@tonedeaf.com.au with your CV and any relevant creative work.

Reviewers & Writers

We're constantly on the look out for new and emerging writers to join our small but growing team. Whether you're studying journalism at university, are looking to get involved in the music industry, or just have a passion for music, we're looking for enthusiastic and reliable writers to help us with assignment features, record reviews, gig reviews, and artist interviews.

For record reviews, we send out a weekly list of new arrivals at the office. If you're assigned as a writer for a record we post out the CD for you to have a listen to and write the review. At the end of the process, the record is also yours to keep.

For gig reviews, we send out a weekly gig list with shows and concerts to choose from over the coming weeks. Every writer is given the opportunity to apply for whichever gigs they'd like, and then our editorial team will assign gigs base on experience, availability, and skill. We apply for access to the gigs on your behalf, so you don't have to pay to attend the show.

Do I get paid?

All of Tone Deaf’s contributors are volunteers and are not paid. Tone Deaf provides free tickets to all events for you to cover and in return ask for a small amount of work, either a photo gallery or review based on your skills.
