Some of you may know them from the soundtrack of the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill, some from their big hair do’s & matching outfits, but most of you will know the triple threat of Rock ‘ n ‘ Roll, bad ass babes of blues & killer tunes the 5.6.7.8’s for their music. Coming all the way from Tokyo, Japan, Ronnie, Sachiko & Yama will be playing a one night only show at Oxford Art Factory. We sat down and talked about their upcoming gig, getting discovered by Quentin Tarentino, and those famous hair-dos.

How have the 5.6.7.8’s managed to keep touring and stay together for so long?
We have has many changes over the years, but I think having sisters in the band keeps us strong and each member has love for the music and always has fun playing . Our songs are very exciting.

What’s your earliest memory of performing and who inspired you to start?
I always looked up to girl group The Ronnettes and loved their style and look, I wanted to do the same thing here in Japan but with more rock n roll music.

Are you looking forward to your ma.gallery show? How did you get involved with the venue and book a show to play there?
We know Kee Kee, the owner of ma. gallery through our friends in Tokyo. When she last visited us and asked us to play a show in Sydney we were very excited and happy to work with ma. gallery. It is good to support smaller promoters and it’s also more intimate.

For the uninitiated, what can people expect from a 5.6.7.8’s show?
Fast songs, rock n roll, dancing & drinking!

Having toured around the world, do you have a favourite place to play?
Nashville is very special to us; we were invited by Jack White to record live at Third Man. I was overwhelmed by all the equipment he has!

What’s your fondest memory of touring in Australia?
Dancing with the Sonics for Dig It Up Festival was lots incredible. The crowd was very excited, everyone was dancing!

What’s your favourite Japanese band at the moment that we should know about?
Eddie Legend Story is a special band, Eddie played in the 5.6.7.8’s very early on, he then created Mad 3 and now Eddie Legend Story. If you like surf guitar and fast music you will love Eddie Legend Story!

Do you have any particular ritual before you go on stage?
Making our big beehives and being together back stage.

If you could have any artist join you on stage for a gig who would it be?
Ronnie from the Ronnettes! Great voice!

What is your band’s music the best soundtrack for?
We were on the Kill Bill soundtrack which was amazing. I think we suit Quentin Tarantino films!

Can you tell us what it was like to be a part of Kill Bill?
This experience will stay with us, it really got us noticed by the world.

Quentin found our band through our friend who owned a store in Tokyo that was playing our record. Quentin was shopping and loved our sound but our friend did not want to sell her only 5.6.7.8’s album to a strange man so she told him to visit the local record store. They did not stock our album so he came back and she sold her album to him for twice the price because it was her favourite!

It’s been a while since a 5.6.7.8’s record, can we expect to see any new releases in the near future?
We have lots of things happening! You better listen out to see what we have in store for you…
