A performance by homegrown post-hardcore outfit Dream On, Dreamer had to be abandoned at the last minute after a flood occurred at Max Watt’s in Melbourne, where the gig was set to take place. Both parties have since released statements.

“Words can’t describe how devastated we are to announce that the show at Max Watts tonight must be cancelled due to flooding of all electrical equipment,” the band wrote on Facebook. “We will be working around the clock to reschedule the show and make it up to you guys.”

“It’s a circumstance that is out of our hands. All tickets and passes will be honoured on the new date. Thank you for your patience. Much love,” they added. According to a statement from the venue, the cause of the flood has been identified.

“A main water pipe has burst under Max Watt’s House of Music venue late this afternoon and due to safety reasons we have had to cancel Dream On, Dreamer show in Melbourne. Ticket purchasers are entitled to full refunds,” the statement read.

“Please contact the ticketing agency where you purchased tickets from, Ticketscout or Oztix. Again we are deeply sorry and we too were looking forward to tonight’s gig.” The statement did not indicate that any other gigs would be affected.

According to the Max Watt’s Melbourne website, the venue currently has a performance from The Mark of Cain scheduled for Thursday, 26th November and an appearance by Zimbabwean musician Oliver Mtukudzi the following evening.

In a subsequent statement, Dream On, Dreamer added, “Sorry again to everyone who had a ticket. It was out of our control and we will reschedule the Melbourne show as soon as possible,” alongside a photo of the band sound-checking inside the venue.

Naturally, many punters were dismayed at the news that the band would no longer be performing in their hometown, with many curious about the fate of the free VIP passes they had won as part of a competition giveaway organised by the band.

It’s not the first time that water has landed Max Watt’s in a tight spot. As Tone Deaf reported back in March, when the venue chain was still called The Hi-Fi, the collective’s Brisbane venue saw punters evacuated after trouble with the sprinkler system.

The emergency sprinkler system in the downstairs dressing room of the Hi-Fi Brisbane was accidentally triggered by the support band “hanging clothes off a sprinkler”. Water gushed down over the stage, backstage area, and electronics area.

“We had to evacuate the building, take everyone outside… It was basically unsafe to then proceed with the show, because you had a foot of water above all the electronics,” Mike Solo of Bird’s Robe told Tone Deaf at the time. The incident occurred during a gig by 65daysofstatic.
