Ahead of performing with the likes of The Love Junkies and Dallas Frasca at the Rock The Bay 2014 festival this Saturday, Austria’s newest power trio sensation Mother’s Cake have offered us an exclusive stream of their debut album.

The band – consisting of the outstanding individual musicians Yves Krismer, Benedikt Trenkwalder, and Jan Haußels – have toured with artist such as Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Velvet Revolver, Living Colour, LeTigre, Deftones, Omar Rodriguez Band, cleaning up audiences and critics alike.

Mother Cake’s music is also featured in director Henning Backhaus’s (a student of Michael Haneke) film Local Heroes, which premiered at 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in 2012.

Creation’s Finest, the band’s debut album that includes single ‘Soul Prison’, which features Ikey Owens from The Mars Volta on keyboards, will be released in Australia for Mother’s Cake’s debut visit. Tone Deaf reviewer Jack Ball takes us through the LP following the exclusive stream.

They have already taken Europe by storm in recent years after the initial release of their debut album Creation’s Finest in 2012. Now the Austrian prog rock group Mother’s Cake are gracing Australia with the release of their powerful album as well as announcing a nationwide tour in February.

The opening track which coincides with the record title, ‘Creation’s Finest’ is the absolute truth as to what the rest of the album will embody. Heavy bass lines and all-round funkadellic-ness are the go with unrelenting reliability throughout.

It is not uncommon for an eight minute long, classic progressive rock track to become a boring procession but the third song on the album, ‘Runaway’, is played at such a frenzied pace with fluctuating tempos it is impossible to press skip. It goes from grungy guitar riffs and slapping bass to intoxicating keyboard solos without missing a beat, a stimulating characteristic that heavily features in each and every song and keeps your earholes metaphorically glued to the music.

As an even further showcase to the Austrian trio’s variety, the fourth track ‘Night and Day’ is completely different again, with a soulful country ambience and a much heavier focus on lyrical prowess.

In a fitting end to a record that neither the artist nor listener wants to end arrives hit single ‘Soul Prison I’ and sequel ‘Soul Prison II’, combining for over 11 minutes of rock goodness and treating the ears to Mother’s Cake’s full musical repertoire.
